What is a Яiver Pig?

One hundred years ago, Oregon forests, located far away from railroad tracks were seen as untouched fortunes. Without nearby railroads, fast-moving rivers offered an innovative and economical way to move the freshly cut timber. From this unique and dangerous transportation method a new type of job was formed….The River Pig.

River Pigs were men who drove the timber down the river to the nearest saw mills. When the logs jammed, the River Pigs would walk across and use a 12 foot pike to dislodge them. Given the dangerous nature of this task, it was not a surprise when a River Pig died on the job. But with high risk came high reward. River Pigs were paid handsomely, much more than other lumberjacks, and at the end of a risky day’s work would oftentimes relax with several glasses of whiskey.

Here at River Pig Saloon, our roots run deep in Oregon and our name pays homage to these brave men with whom we share a common love for relaxing with a tall glass of whiskey.
